Rick Subel and Travis Peterman Lead Audition Camps This Past Weekend
The winter season has begun with audition camps for both guards and drumlines being across the country this past weekend. Leading those auditions for two programs were new Crown Artistic Coordinator, Rick Subel, and new Crown Percussion Caption Supervisor, Travis Peterman.
Rick Subel founded the Paramount Winterguard of Atlanta, GA, in 2011, and the program has grown into a powerhouse in Winter Guard International, expanding over the years to include three different guards. At the 2016 WGI Championships in Dayton, Ohio, the Paramount World Guard placed 5th and the Paramount A Guard placed 1st.
Several past and present Crown Guard members have performed with Paramount. Many were part of the 100 plus who auditioned for the 2017 season this past weekend at Etowah High School in Woodstock, GA.
Joining Rick Subel on the Paramount staff this year is Crown alum and new Guard Caption Supervisor, Joey Powell. Joey will also be working with his winter guard programs at Bowie High School in Texas.
Travis Peterman was also busy this past weekend. After spending three years developing the Cadets Winter Percussion program into a two-year WGI World Class Finalist, he has moved on to take over the George Mason Indoor Drumline of Fairfax, VA.
The GMU Indoor Drumline started in 2007 and since that first season, the ensemble has achieved consistent and measurable improvement in each competitive year. In 2012, GMU won the WGI Independent Open World Championship. With new excitement, enthusiasm, and a new design team, the GMU Drumline moved up to Independent World and finished 8th.
“We had 112 auditionees this weekend and contracted about half the members,” said Travis. “This was the best first audition that I’ve ever personally been involved with.”
Travis is joined on the design team by several Crown percussion staff members including Drill Designer, Sean McElroy and Artistic/Movement Designer, Dan Schack. Front Ensemble Instructor, Alex Kluttz and center snare and battery section leader, Zach Opdenaker are also part of the team, and Crown alumni Mike Bishop and Jake Harpster are on the design team and Front Ensemble staff, respectively.
Both Paramount and George Mason have camps coming up the weekend of October 8-9.
